Project Matrix

As a way to incorporate our research with our design ideas, each of us created a project matrix. Mine includes four categories: the site's existing conditions, history, aesthetics, and program ideas.

Here's a little explanation of some of the images.

The old train depot is not architecturally significant to Ruston. However, it is culturally significant. Once the railroad and depot were built, the population shifted from Vienna to Ruston, making it the central hub activity. It has been said that the city of Ruston is going to tear down the depot, but I am proposing the idea of "recycling" a building to "recycle" waste.

In 1913, Henry Ford used the assembly line to mass produce Model T cars. This mass production mass consumption. Mass consumption has caused massive amounts of garbage. However, I'm taking another look at the assembly line and using it as a huge part of the architecture for my building. Products go through the assembly line to get into our hands, but then they also go through the same sort of process to be recycled. The process and the architecture can be used to teach the public about the need for taking better care of our environment.

The depot will be the main public interface. It will include a lecture room and gallery space. I would like to restore it mostly to its original condition, but incorporate materials that will connect the two buildings.

The warehouse is the "machine". It will house part of the recycling process before it is shipped to another location: drop-off area, balers, shipping containers, and a large over head crane that will transport the containers from the warehouse to the train.

A catwalk will connect the two buildings, allowing the public to get a bird's eye view of the recycling process. I think this is one my favorite things in this project.

Recycle Bins

This past week, I met with 2 of the 3 elementary schools that I'm partnering with to design recycle bins. On Monday I met with 3 fifth graders at Glen View and on Tuesday I met with 2 sixth graders at I.A. Lewis. All of the students are excited about the project and had great ideas to contribute.

I asked the students at Glen View two questions:
Why is recycling important?
"I don't want all of the millions of tons of trash to go in to a landfill and waste all of the space on the earth that we can't spare."

"To save the world from destruction of debris."

"I think recycling helps to protect the Earth, which protects everyone on it."

Why do you want to help with this project?
"I want to help to let the whole work know how important recycling is. Since I can't inform 6 billion people, we can just put recycle bins in noticeable locations."

"It will start a tradition like thing. I can help with the building part."

"I want to help because my family recycles and I think I might have some ideas that can improve the bins and make them more eco-friendly."

The students at Glen View would like to move their future recycling bins to a more convenient location for the public to use.
I'm excited about working with all of the students. I plan to meet again with them in January to show them the progress that I've made on the bins.
